AMD Ryzen Threadripper 7980X & 7970X Linux Performance Benchmarks

Right off the bat were some HPC benchmarks for getting the Threadripper 7000 series parts roaring. With the minIBUDE computational benchmarks, both the Threadripper 7970X and 7980X blew past Intel's Xeon Platinum 8480+ processor that has a list price of $10.7k and at some retailers has a list price as high as $18.6k. With these multi-threaded HPC benchmarks it also shows where the EXPO speeds above DDR5-5200 can actually impair performance compared to DDR5-4800 defaults.

Especially for those on Zen 2 era Threadrippers or older or old Intel HEDT platforms like the once capable Core i9 10980XE, the Threadripper 7970X and 7980X can offer some phenomenal uplift.

While the Threadripper 7970X and 7980X were the fastest CPUs in these benchmarks, they still consumed less power than the Xeon Platinum 8480+ as well as the the Xeon Max 9480 Xeon Scalable Sapphire Rapids processors. The 7980X ended up delivering the best power efficiency of all the CPUs tested.

The Threadripper 7980X tended to deliver a whopping first place finish across the workloads tested.

In a few Rodinia HPC test cases the Xeon Platinum 8480+ secured first place but by a very slim margin.

While the Threadripper 7980X is AMD's top-end Zen 4 HEDT part, let's not forget the 96-core Threadripper PRO 7995WX part that will be featured in its own separate article today if wanting even higher levels of performance.

The impressive Zen 4 Threadripper performance also was in good shape for real-world common workloads like the OpenFOAM CFD software.

The DDR5 EXPO configuration led to faster mesh times, but when it came to execution times, the EXPO configuration at DDR5-6400 was actually slower than DDR5-4800 at its defaults. When it came to the medium mesh size for the OpenFOAM benchmark, the Xeon Max 9480 and Xeon Platinum 8480+ with 8 channels of DDR5 memory were able to outperform the Threadripper 7980X. However, when running those Xeon Sapphire Rapids processors in four channels of memory like the Threadripper CPUs, their performance fell behind the 7980X. For those wanting maximum performance with OpenFOAM, the Intel Xeon Max and AMD Genoa-X processors are really quite beneficial here.

The Threadripper 7980X CPU power consumption was similar to the Xeon Platinum and Xeon Max CPUs tested during this benchmark.
