Ryzen Threadripper with DDR5 RDIMMs installed

For this launch-day benchmarking of the Ryzen Threadripper 7970X and 7980X, the following processors were freshly tested/re-tested for this review:

Ryzen 7 7800X3D
Ryzen 9 7900
Ryzen 9 7900X
Ryzen 9 7900X3D
Ryzen 9 7950X
Ryzen 9 7950X3D
Threadripper 3970X
Threadripper 3990X
Threadripper PRO 5965WX
Threadripper 7970X:
The CPU at its default speeds and running with the DIMMs at DDR5-4800 defaults.
Threadripper 7970X - EXPO: Repeating the run but with enabling the EXPO profile for DDR5-6400.
Threadripper 7980X: The CPU at its default speeds and running with the DIMMs at DDR5-4800 defaults.
Threadripper 7980X - EXPO: Repeating the run but with enabling the EXPO profile for DDR5-6400.
Core i9 10980XE
Core i9 14900K
Xeon Gold 6421N:
Running in full 8 channel mode as supported by Sapphire Rapids.
Xeon Gold 6421N - 4c RAM: Running in just four memory channels to match the four DDR5 channels of the Threadripper CPUs.
Xeon Max 9480: The Xeon Max running with its HBM2e plus 8 channels of DDR5 memory in its caching mode.
Xeon Max 9480 - 4c RAM: The Xeob Max running with its HBM2e plus 4 channels of DDR5 memory in its caching mode.
Xeon Platinum 8480+
Xeon Platinum 8480+ - 4c RAM:
Ditto the above Xeon 4c note.

All of the processors were tested at their optimal/maximum number of memory channels and supported frequencies, except where otherwise noted above such as comparing EXPO impact on the new Threadripper processors and then also testing the Xeon Scalable Sapphire Rapids processors at both 4 and 8 memory channels.

The processor comparison was limited by the CPUs I had available such as not having the recent Xeon W models on hand, only having the PRO 5965WX model of the Threadripper PRO 5000 series, etc. The Threadripper PRO 7995WX review results are being posted alongside this data in its own separate article today.

AMD Ryzen Threadripper 7970X 7980X Linux Benchmarks

All of the CPUs/systems were freshly (re)tested on Ubuntu 23.10 with the Linux 6.5 kernel, GCC 13.2 compiler, and performance CPU frequency scaling governor. The Radeon RX 7900 XTX and 1TB WD_BLACK SN850 NVMe SSD were used across the various test platforms.
