NVIDIA GeForce RTX 4080 / RTX 4090 Linux Performance
Grand Theft Auto 5 continues to have a performance issue on my testing with the Radeon graphics cards running on the RADV driver. There is also a persistent issue of the RX 7900 XTX performance coming in just shy of the RX 6800 XT. Hopefully those RADV issues will be worked out soon but in any case going from the RTX 3090 to RTX 4090 boosted the GTA 5 performance under Steam Play by 30%.
Counter-Strike: Global Offensive remains popular but not too GPU-demanding. At 4K and using the modern Vulkan render path showed similar performance between the RTX 4090 and RX 7900 XTX, but not fully stressing the hardware.
Going back to Steam Play games, DIRT Rally 2.0 was performing great with the new GeForce RTX 40 series graphics cards. All of these gaming tests today were done with the GNOME X.Org Server session due to the GNOME Wayland session still having issues with DiRT Rally 2.0 on Steam Play. The Radeon RX 7900 XTX successfully outperformed the GeForce RTX 4080 in this racing game while the RTX 4090 had a significant lead over the other cards.
With the strong RTX 40 series performance in DiRT Rally 2.0 on Linux, the RTX 4090 and 4080 for a change managed to deliver the best performance-per-Watt followed closely by the Radeon RX 7900 XTX.
But on a performance-per-dollar basis is where the Radeon graphics cards easily led compared to the NVIDIA Founder's Edition graphics cards.
