Mesa's RADV Radeon Vulkan Driver Continues Outperforming AMDVLK For RDNA2 Linux Gaming
Total War: WARHAMMER III is the newest native Linux game release, ported over by Feral Interactive and released this month. Total War: WARHAMMER III with the native Linux/Vulkan build was consistently seeing better performance on Mesa RADV compared to AMDVLK.
For some open-source gaming with the recently updated yquake2 8.10 release, RADV continues showing significant performance advantages there over AMDVLK.
With the X-Plane 11 flight simulator, RADV had a small but consistent lead over AMDVLK with the Radeon RX 6800 XT graphics card testing.
Long story short, the Mesa RADV driver continues maturing nicely and for the majority of Linux games frequently tested that open-source Radeon Vulkan driver continues delivering similar -- or often times, better -- performance than the AMDVLK driver. That's the case with current generation Radeon RX 6000 (RDNA2) series graphics while later this year out-of-the-gate it will be interesting to see how the open-source state is for RDNA3 and how quickly RADV will be able to compete with AMD's official Vulkan driver on the next-generation hardware.
