Phoronix: GCC 15 Bids Farewell To Solaris 11.3 Support

With GCC 14 stable released and GCC 15 now in development on trunk, new feature code is landing for the GNU Compiler Collection. Among the early features is Microsoft contributing the "Windows on ARM64" target with aarch64-w64-mingw32. The start of the new cycle also brings code removal for features deprecated in prior cycles. Among the old code being cleared out in GCC 15 is saying goodbye to Oracle Solaris 11.3...

Good, maybe they can also drop support for IBM AIX, HP-UX and DOS too!

    Oracle killed Solaris!
Lets hope IBM can kill off AIX too and HP can kill of HP-UX too.

Linux was the beneficiary, so I'm hardly upset.

AIX is winding down but not dead yet, there are still plenty of real customers using it.

DOS is still very actively used, developed, and supported in the form of FreeDOS. They actually ship a quite up-to-date and well maintained suite of dev tools.

And Solaris is still used in the form of OpenIndiana. HP-UX also has quite a few customers left.

Their latest release (a couple weeks ago) is still moving to gcc13.
Also, isn't OpenIndiana technically using Solaris 10 as a base? Solaris 11 was closed source.

It feels weird seeing Solaris without CDE or Java Desktop System (a modified variant of GNOME 2). Yes, I know that an OS is not its desktop environment, it still feels weird.

How many OpenIndiana devs are there? One or two? They should just close down and move on to Linux instead.

Yeah, which is why I want to see IBM AIX and HP-UX can close down too to further benefit Linux.

IBM should close down AIX and move off their customers to Linux.

FreeDOS might have served a role two decades ago but it is less relevant than ever with UEFI and Linux. FreeDOS should just close down too.

HP-UX should to close down and migrate over to Linux.
